Explore the hidden secrets of our forests, the fungi that emerge as delicious, deadly, or merely delightful mushrooms.
Join Jonathan Kranz as he teaches safe and responsible foraging methods. Along the way, discover the most delectable edibles, the deadliest toxics, and simply the most beautiful mushrooms our region of New England can provide. You’ll learn the basics of identification, the strange lifestyles of fungi, and the tips and secrets to happy mushroom hunting.
About your instructor:
Jonathan Kranz is a MA Audubon Certified Field Naturalist who leads mushroom walks and talks for libraries, land trusts, clubs, and other interest groups in southern New England. He currently serves as vice president of the oldest mushroom club in North America, the Boston Mycological Club, and is a board member of the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association. He lives with his family in a former funeral home in Ayer, where he is chair of the Planning Board.
Accessibility:
This mushroom excursion will take us across uneven terrain (packed dirt trails with some rocks and protruding roots and other low obstacles, and a mild incline) , through potentially tall or wet grass, and into the forest where we may encounter ticks and other wildlife. We will expect to walk with breaks for most of the two hours that we are together. Please dress for the weather and for your safety and comfort. If you have any concerns or questions about this event, please reach out to Sarah at Sarah@OsamequinFarm.com
