Youth Training at Osamequin Farm

The Youth Training program at Osamequin Farm begins with our summer internship for rising 8th 9th and 10th graders. Our interns learn about sustainable agriculture from seed to harvest by cultivating their own plot of vegetables for sale and for donation to the emergency food network.

Our internship program additionally covers topics such as food insecurity and our food system, green industry career opportunities, land stewardship, post-harvest handling food safety, nutrition, and job skills that will serve our youth in any future endeavor. We invite our participants to share their unique interests and allow those to guide the group’s learning beyond our set curriculum. We invite outside educators to the farm to broaden our perspectives and learn from our extended community.

The internship commitment is one full day per week in July and August. Interns are compensated with a stipend at the end of the summer.

Apprenticeship track

Youth who have completed one summer as an intern are invited to apply to return as an apprentice for up to two additional years.

Apprentices come to us on weekends beginning in May and transition to working two full days during the summer, a deeper commitment than the internship. Our apprentices are compensated hourly. Apprentices serve as mentors for the incoming intern class each summer and cultivate an additional Harvest Garden for the public at Osamequin Farm.

Our longest standing apprentices are invited to apply to serve as Youth Leaders, working in collaboration with our staff beginning in late winter to design and facilitate the program. The Youth Leader position invites our dedicated participants to showcase all that they've learned over their years in the program and gives them an opportunity to shape the experience of our rising leaders.
