Bring the kids over to the farm and help us hunt for all the curly scapes in the garlic patch!
Garlic scapes are the “flower” of the garlic plant and they emerge in June about a month before the garlic bulb is ready. To tell the plant “keep going, send your energy into the bulb!” we have to snap off these delicious curly guys. We’ll use our best seeking eyes to find the scapes amidst the sea of green, and snap them off and collect them in buckets.
Everyone will get to bring home some scapes to eat - use them as you would garlic for a milder, sweeter garlic flavor. Pickle them, throw them whole on the grill, make them into pesto!
This activity will be led by our teen youth crew.
10am meet up at the Farm Stand area at Osamequin Farm.
Dress for the weather! Clothes and shoes that can get muddy, and tick-safe clothing recommended.
Participation is just $5 per kid thanks to support from the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant.
